THE GORA OFFICER

CARMICHAEL WILLIAM CHURCH 'S POV

India is a land of wonders. I like being in India very much the food has more spices than my boring life. I am 26 and I have been in India for the last 6 years, I am on a high rank working as a general, I always go on my favourite spot after a long day , near a little school and under a peepal tree. I sketch their daily, my father used to say ,

" Michael! U will never be a officer if u keep sketching useless things! "

I didn't care much, I never wanted to be a soldier anyways. The Brits are very harsh .

AUTHOR'S POV

It was a very hot day, with angry sun showing no mercy at all . The environment at badi haveli was full of excitement since a boy and his family is coming to see the most beloved daughter of the saheb . Everyone was busy and as usual no one paid attention to Meera . Meera wasn't wanted since her sister requested her to leave she was leaving.

" Going to roam around carelessly again? " Her brother asked .

She smiled and said

" Yeah so u people won't get jealous again by my brightness " . Meera left , with a little bag( basta) in her hand. On the way, many women whispered to each other about Meera most of them were false rumours

" She looks no less than a widow".

" Spoiled".

" Dumb".

" She's still not married".

" Something bad happens whenever she goes".

" She's a bad omen".

When Meera passed them ,they hid their faces as if she was some kind of negative energy . She noticed that and felt sad and heartbroken so this was the price of following ur dreams? She reached the school near a peeple tree where she used to go daily. She sat there trying to listen to the things that was being taught inside . By doing this she only learned hindi alphabets , with a help of a stick she wrote what she heard inside.

" 2×2= 4 "

" What is it? Do ekkum do mtlb ? This is math , math is all about add subtract ".

She stared at the figures, then tried to hear more , this time it was

"3*3= 9".

The children repeated lazily, just when she tried to listen more , the bell rang, and math class was over . Now it was hindi , Meera repeated the shlokas , and when someone saw her , she knew it was time to go . She got up with a bag with a paper but with no pen. She got up and started walking.

MEERA 'S POV

I didn't understand any of the do ekkum do, but I did understand the Sanskrit shlokas, a kaki saw me and frowned with a scrunched forehead. I left before they tell my family and I get locked up. Just when I started walking, I saw a gora officer , angrez sahib . I expected him to be cruel, like other officers, riding on tall horses, screaming on others, beating every one, full of pride , asking endlessly for taxes. They were the other name for cruelty. This officer was looking calm and uncertain, instead of carrying a gun, he was carrying a notebook and a pencil instead of wearing a uniform he was dressed simply in white, his eyes glowed in the sun like jewels his palm was moving rapidly in the notebook looks like he's sketching. His tired eyes were full of enthusiasm. Suddenly he sensed that someone is looking at him , he suddenly looked in my direction, I turned away in embarrassment, then looked again. He was looking at me , with sunlight kissing his face , his intense glass blue eyes looked at me , like he was trying to see the colours of my soul , he didn't looked at me with hatred like other people does, but instead he looked at not with interest, list , but he looked at me as a human, like I deserve to be seen and known. He was beautiful, his eyes were like blue jewels, and his left eye has a mark streching from his forehead to the left cheek, and his white skin shine like glass , his shiny black hair reflected light. After a while he looked away and I ran .
